Rural Recreation

Our Rural Recreation Programme promotes outdoor activity, protects the natural environment and enhances the wellbeing of the people who live in and visit County Louth.

Delivering Embracing Ireland’s Outdoors 2023–2027 locally

Discover the great outdoors

Louth’s landscape is a tapestry of rolling hills, woodlands, rivers and scenic coastline. Rural Recreation encourages everyone to enjoy it:

Walking & hiking

Well-maintained trails through heritage sites, forests and breathtaking views, for all fitness levels.

On the water

Kayaking, canoeing, angling, sailing, paddleboarding and wild swimming.

On the land

Greenways and cycle trails, plus horse riding, orienteering and climbing.

Our Rural Recreation Officer

Louth Local Development employs a Rural Recreation Officer (RRO) who coordinates the management and enhancement of trails and promotes outdoor recreation across the county. The RRO works closely with landowners, communities and visitors, and assists Fáilte Ireland in developing and promoting trails and key walking destinations.
